What is the most important safety principle?A veterinary splint should be treated as a monitored intervention. Fit, padding, wear time and patient response must be reviewed, not assumed.

What should be checked after fitting?

Record the skin at edges and straps, swelling, pain, distal limb temperature and colour, gait or weight bearing, moisture, licking or chewing, and whether the device has shifted. A consistent checklist makes changes easier to identify.

How often should a splint be reviewed?

The interval depends on the diagnosis, wound status, device design and clinician instructions. Recheck sooner after first fitting, re-application, a change in gait, or any sign of rubbing or swelling. There is no single schedule that is suitable for every patient.

Can a knee brace replace surgery for canine CCL rupture?

Not on current evidence. A 2025 report included two dogs, which is useful as early case evidence but cannot prove replacement of surgery or guaranteed recovery. Treatment decisions require examination and diagnosis by a veterinarian.

Should cats use the same protocol as dogs?

No. Cats may require low-stress handling, gradual acclimation and a different tolerance plan. The rehabilitation stage and postoperative stability should be confirmed before fitting.

What findings need prompt clinical advice?

Increasing pain, swelling, cold or discoloured digits, odour, skin breakdown, sudden loss of function, persistent chewing or a device that has moved should trigger prompt contact with the clinic.

What should a clinic document?

  1. Diagnosis and intended support goal.
  2. Baseline skin, circulation and gait findings.
  3. Material, padding, edge finish and fit notes.
  4. Wear schedule and acclimation instructions.
  5. Next review date and outcome measures.
