What current veterinary evidence can—and cannot—tell us about orthosis and splint safety.

Short answer: a splint is only one part of treatment. Skin, swelling, pain, limb temperature and function must be checked repeatedly by the veterinary team, especially after fitting or re-application.

Why follow-up matters

A prospective canine study reported at least one complication in 39 of 43 orthosis or prosthesis cases (91%). The result does not predict the risk for every product or patient, but it shows why fit, padding, compliance and scheduled review belong in the treatment plan.

What should be checked?

  1. Skin at edges, straps and pressure points.
  2. Swelling, pain, heat, colour and distal limb temperature.
  3. Gait, weight bearing and changes in activity.
  4. Wear time, licking or chewing, moisture and device movement.
When should a caregiver contact the clinic? Any new or increasing pain, swelling, cold or discoloured digits, odour, skin breakdown, sudden loss of function or a device that has shifted warrants prompt veterinary advice.

What does the pressure research suggest?

A 2024/2025 canine study examined sub-bandage pressure after re-application of custom rigid hindlimb splints. Its practical message is to treat pressure distribution as a follow-up issue, not merely a material issue. The abstract alone does not establish a universal pressure threshold; patient-specific assessment remains necessary.

How strong is the evidence for knee orthoses?

A 2025 study of canine cranial cruciate ligament rupture included only two dogs. It may inform case discussions and outcome tracking, but it cannot establish that a brace replaces surgery or guarantees recovery. Diagnosis and treatment choice must remain with the attending veterinarian.

Are cats different?

Feline rehabilitation literature emphasizes diagnosis, postoperative strength and low-stress handling. A cat should not simply receive a dog fitting protocol: behaviour, tolerance and gradual acclimation need to be planned individually.
