Start with the conclusion
Most problems that reach a clinic as “the brace does not work” are management problems rather than material problems: migration, edge friction, trapped moisture, difficulty putting it on, a dog that will not tolerate it, a size that no longer matches, or a structure that has aged. This page lists the categories to look for and the observations a structured recheck should cover.
Categories below are compiled from public vendor, marketplace and community material and from cited clinical literature. They are observation and design inputs; they are not incidence rates and they are not performance claims for any product.
Problem categories in daily use
Migration and slipping down
- The device rotates or slides down the limb during walking, so the intended support angle is no longer maintained.
- Common contributors: a circumference change from swelling or weight loss, straps that have stretched, insufficient anti-slip design at the limb-device interface, or an increase in the dog's activity.
- Observation to record: where it migrates to, how long it takes, and whether the limb is loaded differently once it has moved.
Edge friction and pressure marks
- Redness, hair loss or abrasion at the device edge, over bony prominences or under straps.
- Common contributors: edges that were not finished or flared, padding that has compressed, a strap tightened to compensate for migration, or a device fitted while the limb was swollen.
- Observation to record: location, whether redness persists after removal, and photographs over time.
Heat, moisture and odour
- Maceration, odour or skin irritation where the device holds heat and traps sweat, urine or water.
- Common contributors: long continuous wear, activity while wearing the device, contact with water, and linings that cannot be dried.
- Observation to record: how long it stays damp after removal, and how the skin looks directly underneath.
Difficult donning and removal
- The device is hard to put on without assistance, so it is left on longer than intended or gets put on incorrectly at home.
- Practical consequences: less skin inspection, poorer hygiene and a higher chance of incorrect strap tension.
- Observation to record: who puts it on, how long it takes, and whether the same technique is used every time.
Tolerance and adherence
- Initial resistance, pacing, chewing or attempting to remove the device — often worst in the first days of wear.
- If adherence fails, the plan fails regardless of how well the device was made.
- Observation to record: wear time actually achieved versus intended, and what the dog does when it is on.
Sizing and fit changes
- A device ordered or made to an earlier measurement no longer matches after weight change, growth, muscle loss or resolution of swelling.
- A reported pattern worth checking at every recheck: fit that was acceptable at fitting may not stay acceptable over a full treatment course.
Structural wear and failure
- Strap ageing, lining compression, hinge or fastener wear, or deformation of the frame.
- Consequence: the device looks as if it is in place while the support it provides has changed.
- Observation to record: compare the current condition with the fitting record.
A structured recheck should cover
