Record the clinical context
Species and patient
Record species, age, body condition, temperament, activity and relevant history. Dogs and cats vary in anatomy and tolerance.
Affected limb and goal
Identify side, limb segment, joint position and the support goal defined by the clinician.
Landmarks and circumference
Use repeatable anatomical landmarks and document where circumferences were taken. Avoid mixing measurements from different limb positions.
Foot width and length
Record the relevant foot or paw dimensions, including any asymmetry, swelling or bandage allowance.
Sheet thickness and padding
Selection depends on the intended support, contour, available clearance, padding and skin protection; thickness is not a universal prescription.
Fixation and follow-up
Document the planned fixation method, monitoring responsibilities and the clinician’s reassessment plan before fitting.
Measurement record checklist
- Patient identifiers, species, side and date.
- Photographs or sketches showing landmarks and limb position, where permitted.
- Units, tools and repeat measurements with any swelling or dressing noted.
- Open questions for the veterinary team, including skin, wound, neurologic and vascular observations.
