Start with the conclusion
A stifle brace provides external stability, limits abnormal motion and helps some dogs reload the limb. It is used in cranial cruciate ligament (CCL) disease, post-operative protection and rehabilitation. It cannot repair a torn ligament and cannot replace the surgical decision — whether and when to use one is a judgement made by a veterinarian after diagnosis.
What a brace is normally expected to do
- Limit cranial tibial translation and rotation — the main directions of CCL instability.
- Reduce the instability-related discomfort that stops a dog using the limb.
- Provide protection after surgery or during rehabilitation, alongside controlled activity.
- Offer an option to discuss for cases that are not suitable candidates for surgery (subject to strict assessment).
What the evidence says
- Prospective study: dogs wearing stifle braces improved in weight-bearing measurement and functional scores; Hart et al. reported that most dogs had minimal or no lameness by the end of the study.
- Owner-satisfaction survey: non-surgical management (including braces, weight management and rehabilitation) was comparable in subjective satisfaction to some surgical options — but that is not the same as equivalent outcomes; study designs and populations differ.
- Complications: the same body of work indicates that close to 40% of dogs developed skin-related problems in the first three months; braces need managing.
- ACVS position: custom stifle braces are relatively new, and evidence on long-term outcomes remains limited.
What a brace cannot do
- It cannot make a torn ligament heal.
- It cannot replace weight management and rehabilitation training.
- It cannot replace surgery — particularly in large, active dogs or where the meniscus is involved.
- It cannot deliver a good fit through order-by-size online purchasing.
Who may benefit (a discussion direction, not a prescription)
- Dogs that are not surgical candidates because of age, anaesthetic risk or other reasons.
- Dogs that need additional protection and progressive loading after surgery.
- Cases in which a brace is one part of a conservative plan, combined with weight control and rehabilitation.
What to observe while it is worn
- Skin: check every time the device is removed, focusing on bony prominences and edges.
- Fit: look for migration or rotation, or a need for reassessment.
- Gait: is the dog more willing to use the limb, or showing new discomfort?
- Adherence: does the dog resist wearing it, and does the adaptation rhythm need adjusting?
